Advanced Certificate In Alternative Farming VSS003 Sustainable farming methods - the way of the future. Agriculture has seen massive changes in most developed countries over recent decades due to changes in global economics, technology and environmental conscerns. This course provides a foundation for dealing with those changes, whether on your own farm, or in a broader sense. It allows you to develop skills and knowledge in alternative farming methods using materials which have a minimal impact on the environment. The compulsory modules cover sustainable methods of agriculture and organic farming (livestock, pasture, pest and disease management, soil management and crop nutrition). The elective modules cover a broad range of topics specific to alternative farming including: aquaculture, plant and animal breeding, nut, herb and flower production, hydroponics, and viticulture.

Advanced Permaculture BHT301 Learn to design naturally inspired living systems. For people with prior experience in permaculture, this course is a more in depth and academically advanced study of various aspects of permaculture. It covers sustainable systems, how to determine planning strategies for a site, seasonal patterns, water management, earthworks, considering different climates, and comprehansive planning including preparing costings. This will give you a sound background in all aspects of developing and running a permaculture system.

Alternative Energy VSS102 Learn more about using alternative energy sources. Develop a better understanding of how to become less reliant on the electricity and gas companies and save money through alternative energy sources. This course will equip you with knowledge and understanding of the types of alternative energy, better ways to manage energy consumption, how electric and non-electric systems work, different techniques for storing electricity, and use this knowledge to plan how to convert a buildings energy supply to an alternative system.

Healthy Buildings II (Building Environment & Health) Develops skills to evaluate, describe and explain how physical characteristics of a building and its surrounds have an impact upon human health. This course builds on Healthy Buildings I, but can also stand alone as it covers such topics as impact and the macro-environment. The course covers how weather systems and garden design influences the internal environment of a house, health aspects of different furnishings, paints, pesticides and chemicals (and alternatives), alternative methods of pest control, managing building surrounds and interior environments.

Home Vegetable Growing AHT102 Grow your own delicious vegetables! Learn how to grow delicious, fresh, healthy vegetables simply at home. You will learn such things as how to build a veggie garden, cultivation and planting, the main vegetables, how to make compost, pest, disease and weed control, hydroponic and greenhouse growing, herbs and uncommon vegetable varieties, watering and irrigation systems, harvesting, storing and using vegetables.

Irrigation BAG213 Understand the basics of irrigation. This course will teach you to design and manage simple irrigation systems for agricultural applications. You will learn to understand the soil characteristics that affect irrigation needs (such as drainage and water holding capacity) and to estimate plant needs, plus about different irrigation systems, irrigation scheduling and equipment. Learn to understand and use this increasingly important aspect of agriculture.

Mud Brick Construction ASS103 Learn to build with mud bricks. Discover the practical techniques for mud brick building, with hands-on work for experimenting with and planning ongoing projects. Permaculture I VSS104 Learn the basic concepts of Permaculture. This course will help you develop a basis for permaculture design by explaining the patterns which occur in nature, such as weather systems, water cycles, topography, soil-plant interactions and forest ecology, and how a knowledge of these patterns can be used to reproduce balanced and productive garden growing systems.

Permaculture II VSS105 Specialise in planting within permaculture designs. This course is a natural progression from Permaculture I, but can taken separately in its own right. It concentrates on the plants in a permaculture system, how they relate to each other and to the surrounding environment; and selection and placement of different varieties within a permaculture design. This course deals with preparing plans for different types of permaculture gardens.

Permaculture III VSS106 Learn about animals in permaculture gardens. As with Permaculture II, this course is also a natural progression from the earlier Permaculture units, but can be taken separately in its own right. It concentrates on the animals in a permaculture system, how they relate to each other, how they relate to surrounding environments, and selection and management of different types of animals in a permaculture design. The course covers the role of insects, animal husbandry of poultry, bees, pigs, goats and cattle, aquaculture systems, and how to integrate animals into a garden.

Permaculture IV VSS107 Extend your permaculture design skills. Learn to design and manage a comprehensive permaculture system. This course integrates all aspects of permaculture into the design and management of a comprehensive and balanced system. The course covers an overview of permaculture, energy efficient building alternatives, waste disposal systems, recycling, natural watering and sustainable energy alternatives, and designing for natural disasters. You will also undertake a full scale major design project using the knowledge obtained from the course and utilising the learned techniques.

Permaculture Systems BHT201 Learn to develope and maintain permaculture systems. Develope and preapre plans for permaculture systems. (i.e. a unique landscape where plants and animals live balanced in a self sustaining ecosystem). It commonly involves developing a garden or farm where the plants and animals are put together in such a way that they support each others growth and development. The garden or farm may change over years, but always remains productive, requires little input once established, and is environmentally sound.

Self Sufficiency I ASS100 A comprehensive guide to living self-sufficiently. Ten lessons develop your understanding of self sufficiency, food and nutrition, and making the right decisions about changes in lifestyle; as well as showing you how to do a whole range of practical things such as mud brick building, making crafts, growing fruit, vegetables, herbs, and other crops; raising poultry, sheep & goats, extending the life of clothing, conserving energy, recycling, simple home medical care and first aid, and lots more.

Self Sufficiency II ASS101 Learn to grow and make food self sufficiently. Understand the techniques is how to be self-sufficient with food. You learn about nutrition and how to balance your diet, as well as how to produce, process, store, and use different types of food. This includes berries, nuts, milk, cheese, eggs, bread making, preserves, & dried food. Cooking, freezing, drying, bottling, making bread, planning a vegetable garden to give produce all year round, and lots more are covered during the ten lessons.
